Speed

Actor - Keanu Reeves (Portrays Jack Traven)
Film - Speed (1994)
Director - Jan De Bont

I have chosen to analyse Keanu Reeves in the film Speed as I think this is one of his best performances in the action genre and shows his maturity into acting. Keanu's character Jack Traven is an explosive expert for the LAPD SWAT unit, he is a daring character but knows his limits; he will try anything to save people from harm. The sequence I have chosen to study involves Jack Traven and his partner Harry Temple confronting bomber Howard Payne before Harry becomes a hostage and Jack is forced to "shoot the hostage" in order to try and stop Howard. This sequence is 20 minutes into the film.

Jack is forced to enter the elevator otherwise he would be crushed, and as Howard pulls the trigger on the shotgun which has ran out of bullets, Jack's face turns to be worried and then anger after he realises there is no bullets in the gun. He then grabs the shotgun, and tries to hit Howard, but not before he reveals the dynamite on his chest. Jack is hesitant to shoot Howard as he is holding his partner hostage, and tries to threaten Howard with the police that will be waiting for him downstairs.

Although Howard is holding a bomb trigger and Harry as a hostage, Jack fails to let go of his gun and consistently aims it at Howard's face, and his body language suggests he won't lower his weapon, and he doesn't. As they leave the elevator, Jack becomes angry and interrogative until he shoots his partner in the leg, but then fails to shoot the bomber.

His general image is slightly cocky with chewing gum in his mouth, but he is sensible in many aspects and knows how to do his job and do it well. His costume consists of a SWAT uniform, bulletproof vest and communications unit on him adds to the believability of his character.

The dialogue from Jack is delivered almost like he is spitting it to the bomber in spite of what the bomber is doing, and you can hear the underlying tone of anger in his voice. He raises his voice to the bomber in order to emphasise his words. His facial expression after he shoots Harry is almost a "so what" which shows his priority was to catch the bomber.

The interaction with the surroundings is mainly when he walks to the door of which the bomber just exited which suddenly explodes, sendning Jack flying to the back wall and collapsing on the floor, this shows how unexpected the explosion was and how he expected further confrontation and not to be incapacitated
